I tend to get many requests from people all over the world who like to know if there is a way to find out if a website on the Internet is malicious in nature or dangerous in other ways before accessing it.
There are actually a few possibilities to handle that. Most of these require specific IT knowledge however to look up server and domain information at the domain registrar and query databases that contain relevant information.
A better option for most users is to install a web browser extension that handles all of that for them. And one of those extensions is the Web of Trust extension which is available for Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.
Web of Trust rates sites in the four different categories Trustworthiness, Vendor reliability, Privacy and Child safety. The rank for each category is shown as a number between 1 and 100 and on a color coded bar that ranks the sites from very poor to excellent in every category.
Web of Trust places displays an icon in the web browser after installation that displays the colored rating of the website from red (very poor) to dark green (excellent). A click on the icon will reveal the scorecard of the website with options to add ratings for that website.
The toolbar icon can be disabled in case space is an issue in the browser. Web of Trust will still work its magic in the background. One of the most useful features of the extension is the rating of search results in search engines such as Google.
Web of Trust will automatically place icons next to the title of every search result using the same color coded rating system as the toolbar icon. Hovering the mouse over the icon will display the ratings in all four categories in detail and a click on the icon leads to the Web of Trust website with extensive information about that site.
The Web of Trust website can be used to look up any website that the service has in its database correctly if that is needed.
Web of Trust will automatically display a warning page if the user tries to access a website with a poor reputation.
The page displays the ratings and contains options to ignore them or to leave the site and avoid opening it in the web browser.
Web of Trust is an excellent safe browsing tool, especially for users who prefer an automated rating system of websites that is displayed to them all the time.
Users can download Web of Trust from the company website where it is available for all supported web browsers.
